F.D.R. State Park is Georgia's largest state park is a hiker's and backpacker's haven. Many visitors are surprised to find rolling mountains 80 miles southeast of Atlanta. Above King's Gap is Dowdell's Knob where President Franklin D. Roosevelt sometimes picnicked and pondered world affairs. A life-size sculpture of the president now welcomes visitors to the overlook.
The four overlooks start with the one at Dowdell's Knob. It is easy to get to just using your phone GPS. The 2nd and 3rd overlooks are not on the park maps nor do they have an address to find them on your GPS. They are both on the left when you drive from Dowdell's Knob to the park visitor center. The second overlook has absolutely no markers of any kind to identify it (It's before mile marker 5). You simply have to slow down and look for a paved turn around and it has room to park so you can get out and take pictures. The third overlook also has no address or markers and is just after mile marker 4. It does have a pick nick area on the left with a grill that is shaded. All of the first three overlooks can be viewed from the car so even if the country is in lockdown you can go enjoy the views, roll down your window and take in a deep breath of fresh mountain air. The last lookout is in back of the visitor center. There are old fashioned viewers that cost .50 cents and one of them is low so that children or someone in a wheelchair can get a close up view. You do need exact change (2 quarters) to use them.
